WCRS takes part in Big Beach Clean Up at Viking Bay

Waste Cost Reduction Services (WCRS) Ltd has taken part in a mammoth beach-cleaning day in a bid to remove pollution and debris from one of Britain’s most popular beaches.

The beach clean at Viking Bay, Broadstairs, was organised by WCRS client Mace Macro and involved nearly 30 people clearing the beach of plastic bags, fishing ropes, food containers and much more. WCRS team members Kim Vince and Marios Georgiou were quick to volunteer their time to support the operation and WCRS also helped arrange the local disposal of the waste collected, reducing waste miles and supporting the local community.

“The amount of plastic in our oceans and littering our beaches is a alarming problem for future generations and we need to rethink our use of plastic,” says Marios Georgiou, Head of Account Management at WCRS. “I was glad to be able to give up some of my time to help this effort as every piece of litter collected is a triumph for our beaches.”

Around 8 million pieces of plastic end up in the world’s seas and oceans every day, at a rate of one dustbin load lorry every minute, and an average of 5,000 pieces of plastic litter every mile of British beaches. Around 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds, which mistake plastic fragments for food, die due to plastic pollution every year.

Edgar Belov, Facilities Manager at Mace Macro, who took the lead on organising the event commented. “Huge thanks to WCRS for their support and to Marios and Kim, who joined us on the day. I think it is fantastic that we can come together in this way and give back to the environment and is testament to a great working partnership.”

WCRS, which works with businesses to provide high quality, cost effective recycling and waste management solutions, is a company keen to tackle waste issues at every opportunity and Mace Macro was equally pleased with the effort made to clear Viking Bay and families on the beach even joined in the clear up effort.
